AVID Academics
LB Johnson Middle School AVID
AVID is a program that provides students with academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses. The AVID Elective is designed to close the opportunity gap by preparing students for college and career readiness, and ensuring that all students are equipped to be successful in a global society. Johnson Middle School implemented the AVID program in 2000.
AVID students are prepared to be successful because they learn the skills that employers need.
Communication strategies - both written and verbal
Collaboration techniques to effectively work with a team for mutual success
Organizational strategies to maximize productivity
Critical reading and research skills
To confidently speak in front of any type of audience
What makes a Longhorn an AVID student?
A Longhorn AVID student is one who consistently scores in the middle range (high level 2 - level 3) on the FSA tests. Or one who regularly has C's on their report card. This student has the drive and determination to be successful, but may need some help getting to those above average grades. They demonstrate good citizenship and make great choices. Some AVID students may be the first in their family to attend college, while others may have two parents with advanced degrees. Longhorn AVID students come from many different backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common: the drive to make their dreams come true!
